The first meeting in Vasto, Italy

18th - 24th February

Meeting report

After meeting in Vasto the students described the  impressions and evaluation.  All project partners, together with the hosts of the visit,   provided the entire local community with a report on the visit to Italy in the form of a note in the regional press and television. The information included a description of the activity in which we participated and comprehensive benefits they carried these events behind them. In schools, participants presented a detailed report of the lessons and workshops they have taken, so that other teachers can use the new methods and techniques of the classes. There was an evaluation of the visit  during as well as after staying in Italy to allow us to clearly and legibly determine whether the given action has brought the expected result

Impressions after the meeting in Vasto

by Amelia, Klaudia, Paulina and Natalia

Tuesday, 19th February,2019.

On the first day of our stay in Vasto, we met at the School Conference Hall for a welcoming performance. The school was especially decorated with national flags of all partners and posters of The Power of Maths Project. Italian partner greeted the guests and all partners presented their teams. Then all countries presented their schools and the educational system. After that, we went to classes with Italian students. First, we were taken to a room in which Italian children presented us how they implement their own project Fri. "TG NOI", then we  had to describe in English, why we participate in the Erasmus plus program and how we feel in Vasto. Next, we had a math class. Everyone in the class was very kind and when the lesson ended, we decided to take a picture together. After class, we went for a small rest to drink coffee and tea to a nearby cafe. The last planned entertainment for this day was sightseeing  of the monuments of Vasto. After rest, we all went to Rossetti Square, where we were welcomed by students who were our guides to Vasto. We visited a lot of fascinating monuments including Palazzo d'Avalos (museum), the Cathedral of San Giuseppe.

In conclusion, this day was full of impressions. We came back to the hotel, but full of positive energy for the next prepared attractions.

Wednesday, 20th February,2019

On the second day of the visit we had a meeting with the Mayor of Vasto at the Town Hall. The weather was pretty that day, so we went there on foot. We noticed  beautiful paintings hanging on the walls in the corridors of the town hall.  The Mayor, local politicians and students from the schools in Vasto had speeches, which mainly concerned the role of Erasmus Plus project and the school's cooperation with the city authorities. At the end of the meeting we got souvenirs and took photos. Then we visited the Rossetti Theatre and the Palazzo D'Avalos (museum), where there were beautiful works of art, and painted frescoes on the ceilings. After dinner, we went to the beach of Vasto Marina. Our peer showed us around, telling stories of the beach and the city.  A walk on the beach ended in a place where we could see a mermaid - the symbol of Vasto.

Thursday, 21st February, 2019

Early in the morning, after breakfast, together with teams from Portugal, Italy, Turkey and Lithuania, we went by coach to Rome. We were all very excited and very curious about the Italian capital, so we were very happy that we will see Rome.

We got to the city centre by underground. For us  it was  our  first  trip by this mean of transport, so it got a great impression on us. The first monument we saw was the famous Spanish Steps. They are really huge and beautiful. Here, with our friends from other countries, we took beautiful pictures. In  Rome we admired ornate fountains and mansions.  We  saw  the Pantheon - the 2000-year-old temple with its striking pillars and dome. Next, we joined the hundreds of tourists to gaze in wonder at the Trevi Fountain, the famous baroque fountain and the largest in Rome. Recently refurbished, the fountain depicts Neptune’s chariot being led by Tritons with seahorses, crystal blue water from the aqueduct below bubbling out around them. Of course, we threw a coin into the blue waters to guarantee our future return to the city.

We had also opportunity to admire the amazing Castel Sant'Angelo and Piazza Navona. After a moment of rest, we went to Saint Peter's Square, where we visited St. Peter's Basilica. This place surprised us, because the architecture was so amazing that we could not take our eyes off it. It is a really the wonder of architecture that we previously knew only from television and albums. The last point of the program was the Colosseum. Built by the Flavian Dynasty and opened by Emperor Titus in 80 AD, the building was known as the Flavian Amphitheatre. It was the largest in the Roman Empire. Despite, that days it was under renovation, it  got a huge impression on us.

We arrived at the hotel at midnight. Although we were very tired, we were very happy about this trip.

Friday, 22nd February, 2019.

On this day, we visited the kindergarten and school. Children and students presented us with some amazing performances. We were delighted with the activity and display of all students. We really liked the dancing of students on roller skates. After watching all the shows, we went to the classroom to solve math problems. We all focused on performing tasks and cooperated with other teams. The next task was to present one good practice in teaching mathematics. When all the teams showed the prepared works, the teachers from each team went to the design meeting, and we stayed in the room and arranged the lumps. In the evening we met with colleagues from Turkey and Portugal to have a good time together. After two hours we went to bed. It was a great day!

Saturday, 23rd February, 2019

On this day in the morning we had to pack up our suitcases and prepare for the evening departure. The program of the day also included visiting the surroundings of Vasto. It was the coldest day of all days and the wind was blowing so much that it was impossible to walk and that's why we were watching coastal landscapes through the window of the coach. In the bus we were not bored at all because we played  UNO and sang English songs. After lunch, we went to the shopping centre, where there was a last chance to buy  presents for our parents. After shopping, we had to prepare for a farewell supper. At 19.45 we all gathered at the lobby and then we slowly walked to the restaurant where the supper was supposed to take place. Fortunately,  the restaurant wasn't far from the hotel.  We sat at the table with the guys from Portugal, with whom we had a great time. We were served a mouth-watering spaghetti, and later a cutlet with chips. In the meantime, we decided to dance in the lobby. Around 9.30 pm, we were awarded certificates of participation in the project. Then came the worst moment - farewell. Each of us poured a lot of tears and exchanged a lot of hugs. There was sadness on our faces because we had to say goodbye. We also were very happy because thanks to the participation in the project we had opportunity to meet wonderful people. At 11.30 pm we went to the hotel to take our luggage and after a half an hour we took the bus to the airport in Rome. Around 5 pm on Sunday, after a very tiring journey, we arrived to Piła. For the first day we could not come to terms with the fact that this is the end of this wonderful adventure, but we all hope that we will be able to meet in the same group one day.

It was a really amazing time in Italy. We will remember each day we spent in Italy  for many years.

Portuguese Team Report

From 18th to 24th February 2019, 5 students and 3 teachers from Portugal and more 15 students and 9 teachers from Poland, Lithuania and Turkey attended the first meeting in Vasto, Italy.

On the 18th February, all the partners arrived to Rome and had a ride to Vasto City by Bus. In this nice city, we were welcomed and greeted warmly by two teachers and students of the Italian team of Gabrielle Rossetti School. Then all the teams (students and teachers) went to a hotel.

In this week in Vasto city, we had the chance of meeting students of different age and school levels, from pre-school to elementary, and to acknowledge their learning process, through their teachers’ activities.

On the 5th day, the students had the chance to attend math lessons to contact with Italian teaching method related to mathematics. On this day, all the teachers from each country took part in a meeting where were discussed project tasks and we defined the visit to Lithuania and Portugal and some details about individual reports. We were filling an evaluation form given by the Italian team.

The school choir and orchestra shows were great moments, where we viewed a very nice school project related to music and to motivate students.

In a primary school, we assisted a theatre show related to great mathematicians and in a secondary school, we were presented with a show of roller skating.

The mayor and their education staff of the city council invited us to the council house and the students of the young council presented to us their civic projects related to young people of the city.

On the last night, the Italian team prepared a farewell ceremony in a restaurant in which participated the Mayor of Vasto city, Headmistress of Gabrielle Rossetti School and some others political responsible. In this event, we experienced Italian traditional food, music, and dance. In the final were given to each team the certificates of attendance.

The school staff  was extremely nice and planned for all of us a pleasing week, in which we tasted Italian food, visited the most iconic places in Vasto and Rome and had also the chance to talk to each other in a very informal way.

IMPRESSIONS after the meeting in Vasto

During last week in Italy more properly in Vasto, we can participate in classes related to mathematics and in several workshops.

At the Gabriel Rosetti School we were greeted by an orchestra performance of the school's students and the school's skating team.

In the City Hall were welcomed by its President, other education staff and responsible for tourism in the city, as well as elements of the local Youth Council and the director of the Gabriel Rosetti school, where they spoke a little about their civic intervention project in several activities directed young people of the city.

On Thursday, we visited the main monuments of Ancient Rome such as the Colosseum and Vatican City.

During this visit to Vasto we were able to learn about other cultures and to interact with people from other countries, an aspect that made me love this visit.

I enjoyed visiting Rome because it is a city full of history and wonderful.

Eduarda Pinto

At school, we attended math classes but we could have attended more classes so we could experience their practices in our math classes. But the classes we attended, I noticed that he made presentations explaining the subject and then exercising.

In the performance of the choir and orchestra of the Italian school, a staging of plays about great mathematicians and the performance of the skating team of the school, I noticed the abilities of the students.

When we were shown Vasto, I noticed several historical monuments and have a lot of history. The history of this city has a lot of interest.

The project on civic intervention in various activities aimed at young people in the city is very interesting.

On Thursday, we visited the main monuments of Ancient Rome and Vatican City. On these monuments I noticed the architecture and the decorations. The monuments were fascinating.

Maria da Luz Costa

We participated in workshops, attended classes, took a guided tour of the city of Vasto and visited Rome and its main monuments.

Teachers Rita and Rasa

The teachers introduced the innovative teaching methods in teaching mathematics during the meetings at Vasto Gabriele Rossetti‘s school while the students demonstrated mathematical creative and research work. Moreover we were so exicited before the first partnership meeting, because the virtual communication project needed to move into a real life. We could not know if we joined successfully an international group, understood each other or adapted in a new space. Today we can be proud that our pupils have successfully joined creative activities, solved various mathematical tasks and got to know Vasto's sights. We visited Rome, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, with its antique ruins and impressive buildings, museums of cultural treasures and charming bustling squares. We saw the Colosseum, Pantheon, the world's largest Christian St. Peter's Basilica, the Trevi Fountain, and the Vatican.

During the meeting it was good to look at the smiling faces of pupils, to see them communicating in a friendly way. We will never afford to get so many knowledge even in the most modern offices what pupils are experiencing and learning by participating in international projects.

We really enjoyed Italian hospitality, sincerity. We tasted a variety of national Italian cuisine. The project activities were very intense, so we didn't even notice how the week went by.
